FAQ

Q1   What documents are required to apply for a visa?
A1:   You can check the required documents at this link "Visa Application Documents". If you have any questions, please contact the JVAC or the Consulate-General of Japan directly.

Q2:   Do I need a visa for transit in Japan when I go to the U.S.?
A2:    In principle, a transit visa is required to enter Japan for transit in Japan. However, if you are only in a transit zone at the airport and do not need to go through Immigration check or transfer to another airport, then you do not need a transit visa.

Q3:

Can I use a transit visa for business purposes visit?

A3:   No, you cannot. A transit visa is only for transit purpose (changing planes or airport in Japan on the way to another country). If you are traveling to Japan for business purposes, you must apply for a business visa.

Q4:   Do I need a visa if I am the spouse of a Japanese national?
A4:   Yes, you do need a visa to enter to Japan.

Q5:    If I get a new passport, is the visa on old passport still valid?
A5:   Yes, it is still valid. At the time of your arrival in Japan, both new and old passports must be presented.
If you wish to transfer your visa to a new passport, please apply for a visa transfer at the Consulate. Documents required for visa transfer application are application form (provided at the Consulate), a photo (4.5x4.5cm, white background, within 6 months), old passport and new passport. It takes a minimum of 4 working days and no payment required.

Q6:   What is the visa validity and length of stay?
A6:   The expiration date of the visa is indicated on the [Date of expiry] in the upper right corner of the visa. The single-entry visa can be used only once, while the multiple-entry visa can be used as many times as necessary within the period of validity. The period of stay is the period indicated in [For stay (s) of], but it is the Japanese immigration inspector who determines the period of stay and grants landing permission. The actual period of stay is the period granted by the landing permission. If you have a visa with an expiration date of April 1, 2020, and a stay period of 90 days, you must enter Japan by April 1, 2020. You can stay in Japan for 90 days (the period of stay approved by the landing examination) starting from the day after you enter the country.

Q7:

Is it possible to extend the validity of my visa?

A7:

No, you cannot. You must re-apply for a new visa.

Q8

If I am applying for a visa for sightseeing and do not have a specific place to stay, can I leave the application form and schedule of stay blank?

A8:

No, please be sure to fill out the form according to your travel plan.

Q9:   Are there any minimum amounts or other rules for bank accounts?
A9:   There is no specific rule for the minimum balance. The decision will be based on a comprehensive review of your application, including the length of stay and activity plan in Japan.

Q10:   Which nationalities require a visa to enter Japan?
A10:   Indonesian nationality needs a visa to enter Japan. Please refer to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for information on other nationalities.

Q11:   I have an APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) and will be traveling to Japan. Do I need to apply for a visa?
A11:   APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) holders visiting Japan for business purposes do not need a visa. If you are visiting Japan for non-business purposes, you will need a visa for the purpose of your visit.

Q12:

If I cannot enter Japan before the re-entry permit expires, is it possible to extend the re-entry permit?

A12:   Re-entry permit extension can be processed if there is a proper reason. Within the validity period of the re-entry permit, the period of validity can be extended for up to one year without exceeding the period of stay, not exceeding six years (seven years for special permanent residents) from the date the re-entry permit was issued. Please fill out the application form and bring your residence card and passport with you to the Consulate. However, if you have left Japan with a "Special re-entry permit," you cannot extend the period of stay.
For more information on re-entry permits, please contact the Ministry of Justice's General Information Center for Foreign Residents at +81-3-5796-7112 or the regional immigration office that processed your residence card.

Q13:

What is the reason for denial of visa issuance?

A13:   Please understand that the reason for refusal is that the application did not meet the principal criteria for visa issuance.  Therefore, we cannot provide further information regarding the reasons for visa refusal, The Administrative Procedure Law, Article 3, Paragraph 1, Item 10, exempts "dispositions concerning immigration of foreign nationals" from the obligation to present examination criteria, reasons for refusal, and the like.

Q14:

I lost my passport with re-entry permit or "Special re-entry permit" when I was back home in Indonesia. Can the Consulate-General re-issue a re-entry permit?

A14:    No, we cannot issue a re-entry permit. In this case, after receiving a new passport from your country, please ask your guarantor or relative in Japan to apply for a "Certificate of re-entry permit deadline" at the regional immigration office. For details of the procedure, please inquire at the regional immigration office where the application is to be made. If you enter Japan with a new visa, the status of residence (or permanent residence permit) granted in the past will expire.
